This indicator shows the percentage of New Zealand children living in households that experience material hardship. The term ‘material hardship’ means that the household is missing out on a handful of things that could be expected in a typical household, for example:

  • doing without or cutting back on trips to the shops or other local places
  • eating fresh fruit or vegetables.
