Early childhood education participation

This indicator will aim to measure the extent of participation in, and quality of, early childhood education (ECE) in New Zealand. This is associated with positive outcomes in the short and long term.

This measure still needs to be developed.

As a proxy, we have information on the percentage of children in their first year of school who have regularly attended an ECE institution in the six months before starting school.

In 2019,

97.1%
of children regularly attended an ECE service in the 6 months before starting school
