Economic self-determination

Work, income and wealth, housing

Economic self-determination recognises a person’s desire to:

  • establish their own economic wellbeing
  • have the material wealth and income to meet their own needs
  • contribute to the wider economic growth.

It is captured in tino rangatiratanga (self-determination or sovereignty). Tino rangatiratanga reflects the fact that Māori retain ownership over and management of their resources and taonga (treasures) alongside their rights and privileges as New Zealand citizens.
