Knowledge and skills

Knowledge and skills relate to both formal and informal educational attainment, including literacy and numeracy skills, basic competencies, and life experiences. Education is measured alongside life experiences because:

  • it influences a person’s ability to meet their basic needs
  • it widens the range of career options that are open to a person
  • it allows a person to have more control over the direction their life moves in.
Knowledge and skills

In one Maori legend, the god Tane climbed to the heavens to collect three baskets of knowledge for mankind – tuauri, tuatea, and aronui.
