Net greenhouse gas emissions

This indicator shows New Zealand’s total net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (kT CO2-e). Net GHG emissions include gross GHG emissions combined with the emissions and removals from land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF). There is a distinction between gross GHG emissions and net GHG emissions because some industries in the LULUCF sector both emit and remove GHGs.

Net GHG emissions are measured in ‘CO2 equivalent’ because this means different greenhouse gases can be consistently reported and compared.

Net greenhouse gas emissions in 2017 were

65%
higher than 1990 levels.
